Thatch Assessment
We first assess your lawn's thatch layer to determine if dethatching is needed. A thin layer (less than half an inch) is beneficial. We only recommend dethatching when the layer exceeds half an inch.
Mechanical Dethatching
We use specialized equipment that removes excess thatch without damaging healthy grass. The process involves vertical cutting through the thatch layer, removing accumulated dead material, and allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach roots.
Timing
For cool-season grasses in central Washington, early spring (March-April) is ideal; early fall (September) is also effective. We avoid dethatching during hot, dry summer months.
Post-Dethatching Care
After dethatching we recommend overseeding to fill in thin areas, fertilization to support recovery, proper watering, and avoiding heavy traffic until the lawn recovers.
